Fortino Winery & Event Center Awarded Silver Medal
Honors from the
Prestigious 2008 Monterey Wine Competition for their
2005 Carignan Wine
Gilroy, California - April 2, 2008 - Fortino Winery, a
small, family-owned and operated Santa Clara Country
winery founded in 1970, has won a prestigious Monterey
Wine Competition Silver medal for its 2005 Carignan
(local favorite and signature wine).
This year over 1200 wines from 8 countries were
evaluated by 24 wine professionals over a 2-day period
at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds. Judges awarded 55
gold, 255 silver, and 394 bronze medals, and with
entries from as far away as New Zealand and South
Africa, the Monterey Wine Competition has evolved into a
truly global event.
“Originating in Cariñena, Spain, Carignan grape’s
upright growth habit allows it to be grown old-world
style, without a trellis,” says Gino Fortino,
fourth-generation winemaker and co-owner of the winery
with his sister Teri Fortino. “In the Languedoc region
of France, the grape is often blended with other wines,
such as Cinsaut, Cabernet Franc, and Mourvèdre, to name
a few; Our 80-year old, dry-farmed grapes produce such a
wonderful tasting varietal that we love it all by
itself, with much success!”
Gino and assistant winemaker Nancy Freire continually
strive to leverage the Hecker Pass Valley’s exceptional
microclimate, where the proximity to coastal California
weather patterns work their magic on all of Fortino’s
premium grapes, resulting most recently in The 2008 San
Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition’s prestigious
Schott Zwiesel Silver Awards for the 2005 Charbono (rare
Italian varietal) and the 2005 Carignan, with the 2005
Estate Cabernet Sauvignon receiving a Bronze Award.
Fitting their motto,” The Next Generation of Fun”
Fortino Winery & Event Center prides itself in serving
great wines and good times in a warm and inviting
atmosphere, as evidenced by the 2007 “Gilroy Dispatch
Reader’s Poll” award for being Gilroy’s Best Wine
Tasting experience.

Wino 101
Wine masters Gino Fortino
and Nancy Freire

The
Fortino Wino 101 Wine event with Gino Fortino
and Nancy Freire on Thursday, March 20th, was a fun
and informative session on the basics of wine making
with plenty of great questions from the audience
thrown in.
On
the cusp of our harvest season, wine masters Gino
and Nancy brought their Enology
talent to the Wine Bar where a delicious spread prepared
by Terry Fortino complimented the Cabernet Sauvignon
and Charbono which flowed throughout the night.
The evening answered such questions
as:
"what are legs?"
"how do you measure Brix?" and
"what Fortino Family secrets
contribute to your award winning wines?
and many more!
One of a series of three
courses on food and wine, this class was designed to
be fun and educational, allowing the
students learn how to experience the nuances of wine with the
help of "scent" glasses filled with the essence of
some of the most commonly found smells experienced
in wines such as anise, oak and mushrooms.
Our
happy guests went home with a
Fortino Souvenir Glass looking forward to our next class. Please
visit Wine 101 for a copy
of the presentation.
